[Animal Welfare Ethics] What's the Difference Between Animal Welfare and Animal Rights? It's important to know!

Animal rights and animal welfare sound the same, but they're different concepts. Here's why it's important for you to know the difference.

[Animal Rights & Ethics] A Texas Rancher Cloned Deer For Years. Some Lawmakers Want To Legalize It.

The Lone Star State has long muddled the line between hunting and farming.  Now cloning may help game ranches breed big buck$. A Republican legislator wants to legalize deer cloning, and is accusing Texas wildlife officials of using the COVID-19 pandemic to undermine a breeder’s attempts to spawn big buck$. In a state that often blurs the distinction between hunting and farming, many game ranches have looked to science ― from supplemental protein to artificial insemination ― to grow bigger game for the deep-pocketed customers willing to pay well over $10,000 to shoot them. The proposed law, from state Rep. Matt Krause of Fort Worth, would legalize cloning to help in that endeavor. But the prospect of commercial deer cloning has raised concern from wildlife officials, who say a rancher cloned and sold deer for years without the state’s knowledge or authorization. Krause filed the bill on behalf of Jason Abraham of Canadian, Texas, who told HuffPost he has cloned somewhere between 35 a

[Activism] Huge PETA Win! Taiwan Ends Drowning, Electroshock Tests on Animals

In a groundbreaking PETA victory, horrific drowning and electroshock tests on countless animals will no longer be conducted in Taiwan by companies wanting to make anti-fatigue marketing claims that consuming their food or beverage products may help consumers be less tired after exercising. After receiving PETA’s detailed scientific critique and more than 73,000 e-mails from PETA supporters during a public comment period for the agency’s draft  anti-fatigue health claim regulation , the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has  finalized the regulation and removed animal testing  as an option for companies to pursue. Now, only safe and effective human tests are required and allowed. We need your help now to push for an end to animal testing for a different TFDA draft regulation—this one concerning joint-protection health claims for marketing foods and beverages to consumers.  The agency has proposed allowing gruesome, misleading experiments that would chemically or surgically in

It’s moving viewers to tears—and action. Experience PETA’s bold new exhibit and see nearly 200 stories about animals used in experiments. “Without Consent,” PETA’s new traveling exhibit, challenges human exploitation of animals by revealing the long history of suffering inflicted on nonconsenting animals in laboratories. The exhibit features almost 200 stories of animals used in real-life experiments, from decades ago through the present. PETA debuted the exhibit— a massive display featuring two 7-foot-by-7-foot cubes—in Washington, D.C. , where research grants are chosen and awarded, and will display it in city centers and on college campuses around the country. Now anyone can visit “Without Consent” virtually here and read the stories of animals who’ve endured harrowing experiments—including dogs forced to inhale cigarette smoke for months or electroshocked so many times that they gave up even trying to escape, newborn monkeys taken from their mothers and raised alone in a “pit of de

[Video] You Tube Bans Fake Animal Rescue Videos

Following an investigation by animal welfare organization Lady Freethinker, YouTube is implementing a ban on staged rescue videos that purposely place animals in jeopardy. Popular online video-sharing platform YouTube recently announced it is implementing a ban on staged animal rescue videos.  The platform has noticed a “disturbing trend” of people putting domesticated animals in dangerous situations—such as puppies and rabbits being suffocated by snakes and cats found buried alive—to film an apparent rescue.  According to YouTube ’s global head of trust and safety, Colin Goulding, the company will also focus on banning eating live animals in videos. The ban follows an extensive investigation by animal welfare organization Lady Freethinker that flagged more than 2,000 videos for animal abuse , garnering 1.2 billion total views.  The videos of staged animal rescues are often made so the filmmakers can gain views, subscribers, and revenue.  According to media outlet Business Insider , t

[Activism] Seaspiracy - An Animal Rights Activist’s Perspective

Have you heard about this documentary Seaspiracy?  Of course you have.  While it may be a great resource to educate the public, what if the documentary, and the others in the series, were actually doing more harm than good for animal rights activists and our movement?  What if they were keeping us back from doing the crucial work to grow our movement and achieve the tangible goals the movie lays out for us? I have feelings. Obviously.

[Activism] From Mud to Hugs: See This ‘Backyard Dog’ Now!

This video celebrates the rescue of a gentle dog who spent years chained up outside in a muddy backyard. The only affection she received came from PETA’s fieldworkers, who visited her as much as they could, giving her water, food, and companionship—but some days, she was so timid and depressed that she didn’t even come out of her doghouse.  All that changed when her owner finally agreed to let PETA find her a new home. Now, she has a fancy new name (Wolfie von Fluffer Bottom, or Wolfie for short) and lives indoors with a family who loves her—and a warm home, cuddles on the couch, and playtime with her new dog brother was all she needed to bring her out of her shell.  PETA's mission statement is that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way: https://www.peta.org/about-peta/  The website the meat industry doesn't want you to see: https://www.meat.org/   How to go vegan: https://how-to-go-vegan.peta.org/   PETA Saves: h

[Animal Life] This Pregnant Pig Jumped From a Truck Heading to the Slaughter House – Now She’s Living Free With Her Babies in New Sanctuary Home (VIDEO)

People who abuse animals often do so under the incorrect assumption that animals are too stupid to know what is happening to them. But as we know, this is hardly the case, and animals show us how intelligent they are every day. Take, for example, the story of Rita the pregnant pig. Before Rita lived at Animal Place sanctuary, she was raised on a factory farm . This sort of existence is typically nothing short of horrific for sows who are confined to small crates and deprived of all their basic needs.  All this changed for Rita, however, when she was loaded onto a truck to be transported to slaughter. She was smart enough to know that she had to escape, so she took a leap of faith! Continue...

[Animal Rights] Chinese hotel with polar bear enclosure opens to outrage

Harbin hotel keeping threatened species in pen overlooked  by bedrooms angers animal welfare groups A Chinese hotel built around a central polar bear enclosure for the non-stop viewing pleasure of its guests has opened to immediate condemnation from conservationists. At Harbin Polar Land in north-east China , the hotel bedrooms’ windows face onto the bears’ pen, with visitors told the animals are their “neighbours 24 hours a day”. A video shows the bears – a threatened species – being photographed by crowds of guests under harsh warm lights, in a space consisting of fake rocks and icicles and a white painted floor. Animal rights organisations reacted with outrage, urging customers to stay away from establishments profiting “from animals’ misery”. “Polar bears belong in the Arctic, not in zoos or glass boxes in aquariums - and certainly not in hotels,” said Peta Asia’s vice-president, Jason Baker. [Animal Rights] MPs Call On UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson To Outlaw Intensive Farming

A coalition of MPs is calling on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to outlaw intensive farming. An Early Day Motion has been signed by 16 MPs from Labour, the SNP, the Green Party, and the Liberal Democrats. It urges Johnson to ‘listen to the public’ and permanently ban factory farming in the UK. The motion is supported by vegan charity Viva! It recognizes that ‘intensive farming methods inflict terrible suffering on some one billion land animals in the UK each year’. It also says factory farms provide a ‘fertile environment for the amplification and transmission of viruses and bacteria between different species and humans’. As well as drawing attention to the ‘rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance’ caused by livestock farming.  Continue...
