What is a gluten-free vegan diet, what are the health benefits, and what do gluten-free vegans eat? Don't worry, you can still have pizza! If you’re eating a gluten-free diet, you may have noticed that many of the foods are already plant-based: fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and legumes. So if you are looking to adopt a gluten-free vegan diet, there are many foods to choose from. Let’s start with the basics. Gluten is the name of the proteins that are found in several grains: wheat, rye, barley, and a rye/barley hybrid called triticale. Grains that contain wheat include whole wheat, bulgar, farro, farina, spelt, graham, durum, bromated flour (flour treated with potassium bromate), kamut (Khorasan wheat), and wheat berries. Wheat, rye, and barley are found in pastas, breads, and cereals, while barley is found in malt, food coloring, and brewer’s yeast.   A vegan fried chick*n brand has spared more than 10,000 chickens as demand for its products continues to soar. VFC is founded Veganuary’s Matthew Glover and restaurateur Adams Lyons. Its plant-based chicken, made from wheat protein, is said to look, taste, and ‘pull apart’ like chicken. Moreover, its products are all soya- and nut-free. [Health] Dietitian Debunks Report Calling For Over 65’s To Eat More Meat And Dairy

  'It is incorrect to say that the best source of iron is meat. Our bodies do absorb haem iron more efficiently than the non-haem iron in plants'. A report by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) claiming people over the age of 65 should increase their meat and dairy intake has been blasted ‘disappointing’ by a dietitian. The FSAI is a statutory body and claims its recommendations are to ‘improve health’ among older adults and promote increased muscle mass. Published this week, the report sets out a list of dietary guidelines. It recommended the increased consumption of high-quality proteins. These are to be found in meat, poultry, fish, dairy, and eggs, it claimed. However, it makes no mention of plant-based proteins such as legumes, tofu, tempeh, and nuts. Continue...

'The best thing anyone can do for the environment is to reduce meat consumption...' Children’s TV series Blue Peter is encouraging viewers to go meat-free to fight the climate crisis . The show has launched a new initiative called Climate Heroes, which challenges participants to take on eco-friendly tasks. There are three separate pledges, which includes requests. such as ‘Sort the rubbish recycling at home carefully’ and ‘Save water by turning off the taps when you brush your teeth. Using less water gives plants and trees more to drink’. If children stick to the pledges for at least two weeks, they can apply for a green version of the iconic Blue Peter badge. Continue...  

Plant-based Diets Could Become the Norm within 100 years

Plant-based diets could replace traditional diets within a century if they continue to grow at the current rate. Veganism has exploded in recent years, with plant-based offerings growing exponentially across the globe. And according to Business Expert , plant-based diets could replace the traditional meat-heavy diet within a century if alternatives continue to grow at the current rate. The vegan food market is expected to reach $35.5 billion by 2027, an increase of 219% in eight years. Perhaps the biggest area of growth is the plant-based milk market. In just five years the market has increased by 9%, while the dairy industry shrunk by 6%. Moreover, Veganuary participants have surged from just 4,000 in 2014 to a monumental 584,000 in 2021. [Business] Plant-Based Food Sales In US Exceeded $7 Billion In 2020

'Almost 40 percent of households now have plant-based milk in their fridge' Plant-based food sales in the US retail sector grew by 27 percent in 2020, and exceeded $7 billion. The data*, commissioned by the Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA) and The Good Food Institute (GFI), was published today.   Plant-based food sales It found the plant-based food market grew almost twice as fast as the total US retail food market. Which, increased 15 percent in 2020 due to COVID-19 shutting down restaurants. The report also says the value of plant-based meat – the second-largest plant-based category – hit $1.4 billion last year. Continue...
