Mitigating Environmental Impact: Veganism as a Sustainable Alternative

"Embracing veganism offers a powerful way to mitigate environmental degradation caused by animal agriculture, leading to a more sustainable future for our planet." Michael Corthell Animal agriculture's environmental impact is a pressing concern, with far-reaching consequences for deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and biodiversity loss. This paper explores the detrimental effects of animal agriculture on the environment and advocates for veganism as a sustainable solution. Deforestation One of the most significant impacts of animal agriculture is deforestation. Forests are cleared to create grazing land and cultivate feed crops for livestock. This process releases substantial amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, exacerbating climate change. Additionally, deforestation disrupts wildlife habitats and displaces indigenous communities (Foley et al., 2005). Greenhouse Gas Emissions Livestock farming is a major source of greenhouse gases, pa

The Role of Veganism in Conservation and Climate Mitigation Efforts

"Embracing veganism is a powerful step towards a more sustainable future. By choosing plant-based options, we not only protect biodiversity but also mitigate the impacts of climate change. It's a conscious choice that empowers individuals to be stewards of our planet." Michael Corthell Veganism has emerged as a prominent lifestyle choice in recent years, often touted as a means to save species and combat climate change. Advocates argue that by abstaining from animal products, individuals can significantly reduce their environmental footprint. This critical analysis aims to assess the effectiveness of veganism in achieving these goals, drawing on scientific research and expert opinions. Conservation of Species One of the primary arguments in favor of veganism is its potential to save species from extinction. The livestock industry is a major driver of habitat destruction, leading to the loss of biodiversity. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), agriculture is the l

6 Ways That Going Vegan Can Help Save the Environment

"Eating plant-based: a powerful choice. For the planet, animals, and our future. Let's embrace a compassionate lifestyle that nourishes both body and environment. Together, we can make a positive impact." The Vegan Project Global In recent years, the environmental impact of our dietary choices has gained significant attention. Choosing a vegan lifestyle, which involves avoiding animal products, can have numerous positive effects on the environment. Here are six ways that going vegan can help: 1. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Animal agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing the transportation sector. By eliminating animal products from our diet, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and combat climate change. 2. Conserving Water: Raising animals for food requires a substantial amount of water, from watering crops to providing drinking water for livestock. Adopting a plant-based diet helps conserve water and ensures its ava

[Commentary] We Need to Talk About David Attenborough (Sorry David)

I respond to what David Attenborough has been saying recently in the press about eating meat, and go through his latest documentary 'A Life on Our Planet' to react to his thoughts on a plant-based diet and "sustainable" fishing.

[Environment] David Attenborough Named People’s Advocate Ahead Of UN Climate Summit – But Will He Criticize Animal Ag?

The natural historian has used his platform in the past to advocate plant-based eating. Veteran broadcaster Sir. David Attenborough has been named People’s Advocate ahead of the UN climate summit. The natural historian will work with the UK as a host of COP26 – an event organized to ‘accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement’. He will address world leaders at major international events over the next six months and put forward a ‘compelling case’ for climate action. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised Attenborough for inspiring ‘millions of people in the UK and around the world’ to help protect the planet for future generations. Continue...

[Environment] Veganism as a Strategy for Sustainability | Evan Parker

Humanity is facing a critical moment in our history. Severe environmental issues such as climate change, land-use change, and biodiversity loss threaten to disrupt civilization at the global level.  To address these issues, humans must cultivate a sustainable world. In this talk, Evan Parker offers a surprising yet impressive sustainability solution: veganism.  Discover why veganism is both a necessary social justice philosophy and a powerful strategy for sustainability.

[Environment] This Company Is Leading The Fight Against Single-Use Plastic

It now goes without saying that the world is at serious risk from escalating environmental hazards. News reports about global warming, the use of fossil fuels, and other alarming ecological disasters are now ubiquitous. But somehow, the ever-growing single-use plastic crisis has garnered less attention, despite it now reaching epidemic proportions. Plastic is a durable product, designed for longevity. While this is useful in some regards, it’s also becoming increasingly apparent that it spells bad news for the environment. It all boils down to the sheer scale of plastic produced, and the incredibly long time it takes to break down. The mass-production of plastic only started in the 1950s. Yet since then we’ve created 8.3 billion tonnes of the material. To put this in perspective, that’s the equivalent weight of 25,000 Empire State Buildings , or 100 cities full of skyscrapers. [Environment] Eating less Meat won't save the Planet Debunked

What I've Learned is at it again with defending meat consumption, this time encouraging people to just not worry about the environmental impacts of meat consumption. Let's see how valid the argument is.

[Environment] What really happens to the plastic you throw away

We’ve all been told that we should recycle plastic bottles and containers. But what actually happens to the plastic if we just throw it away?  Emma Bryce traces the life cycles of three different plastic bottles, shedding light on the dangers these disposables present to our world.   Lesson by Emma Bryce, animation by Sharon Colman.

[Climate] What if there were 1 trillion more trees?

How can trees help in the fight against climate change? Dig into the efforts to rebuild damaged ecosystems and reduce carbon emissions.  Today humanity produces more than 1,400 tons of carbon every minute. To combat climate change, we need to reduce fossil fuel emissions, and draw down excess CO2 to restore the balance of greenhouse gases.  Like all plants, trees consume atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis. So what can trees do to help in this fight?  Jean-François Bastin digs into the efforts to restore depleted ecosystems. Lesson by Jean-François Bastin, directed by Lobster Studio.

[Environment] Meatless Farm Urges UK Government To Discourage Meat Consumption To Meet Carbon Targets

It comes after the UK government announced the world's most 'ambitious' carbon emissions targets Credit: Meatless Farm Vegan meat giant The Meatless Farm Company is urging the UK government to up its chances of meeting carbon emission targets. The company welcomed the government’s targets to slash emissions by 78 percent by 2035 – announced earlier this week – but argues they don’t go far enough. Gas emissions targets Meatless Farm calls the government to improve access, availability, and understanding of meat reduction. This is in order to meet the targets – which Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared ‘the most ambitious in the world’. Continue...

[Environment/Health] Beans Not Beef for the Planet and People

Beans, not beef! That's the message doctors with the Physicians Committee are sharing with policymakers in Washington, D.C., this Earth Day to raise awareness of the role of dietary contributors to climate change.  Studies show that beans are beneficial for both the health of the planet and the health of people. The demonstration coincides with the White House’s climate summit with 40 world leaders. The Physicians Committee recently petitioned the White House to update its executive order titled “Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad” to recommend policy changes that could help alleviate the climate crisis and improve human health by cutting animal agriculture and promoting a plant-based diet.

[Climate Change] US West prepares for possible 1st water shortage declaration

It comes as climate change means less snowpack flows into the river and its tributaries, and hotter temperatures parch soil and cause more river water to evaporate as it streams through the drought-plagued American West. The man-made lakes that store water supplying millions of people in the U.S. West and Mexico are projected to shrink to historic lows in the coming months, dropping to levels that could trigger the federal government's first-ever official shortage declaration and prompt cuts in Arizona and Nevada. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation released 24-month projections this week forecasting that less Colorado River water will cascade down from the Rocky Mountains through Lake Powell and Lake Mead and into the arid deserts of the U.S. Southwest and the Gulf of California. Water levels in the two lakes are expected to plummet low enough for the agency to declare an official shortage for the first time, threatening the supply of Colorado River water that growing cities and farm
