[Animal Rights] MPs Call On UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson To Outlaw Intensive Farming

A coalition of MPs is calling on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to outlaw intensive farming. An Early Day Motion has been signed by 16 MPs from Labour, the SNP, the Green Party, and the Liberal Democrats. It urges Johnson to ‘listen to the public’ and permanently ban factory farming in the UK. The motion is supported by vegan charity Viva! It recognizes that ‘intensive farming methods inflict terrible suffering on some one billion land animals in the UK each year’. It also says factory farms provide a ‘fertile environment for the amplification and transmission of viruses and bacteria between different species and humans’. As well as drawing attention to the ‘rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance’ caused by livestock farming.  Continue...

[Factory Farms] Animal Protein Consumption To Start Declining by 2025

Europe and North America will hit ‘peak meat’ by the year 2025 – meaning the consumption of animal protein will begin to decline. A new report predicts the market for alternative proteins will grow to 97 million metric tons by 2035 – making up 11 percent of the overall protein market Food for Thought: The Protein Transformation says faster technological innovation and full regulatory support could boost growth to 22 percent of the market by 2035. At the latter’s rate, Europe and North America would reach ‘peak meat’ by 2025. Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Blue Horizon Corporation (BHC) conducted the research. BCG managing director Benjamin Morac said: “Alternative proteins could soon match animal protein in taste, texture, and price. Continue

[News] Govt is failing to stop the suffering of hundreds of millions of chickens

New Zealand raises over 120 million chickens for meat every year who have been selectively bred for rapid growth.  They’re still babies when they’re slaughtered at six weeks of age. The combination of rapid growth and dirty, overcrowded farming conditions puts these birds at risk of suffering from debilitating and painful health problems. SAFE Campaigns Manager Jessica Chambers said the Government must intervene. "This is as bad as it gets for farmed animals," said Chambers. "Chicken farming practices are inconsistent with the Animal Welfare Act and the Government has to do something about it. It’s simply wrong to put these animals at such high risk of pain and suffering during their short lives." In 2011, the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) raised concerns that chicken farming practices risked creating birds that spent part of their short lives in pain. A report published last week by the New Zealand Animal Law Association echoed these conce

[Wet Markets] 'It's going to happen again': Fears wet markets could lead to another deadly disease

Oluwo Fish Market teems with life. It is a wet market just outside Lagos, Nigeria's largest city. ITV News secretly filmed there - a place awash with animals - alive and dead. Scientists believe wet markets are a breeding ground for disease, a high risk environment, from where the next pandemic could emerge. The very concept of a “wet market” means the presence of blood and bodily fluids. It is a marketplace selling fresh meat and fish, as opposed to a “dry market” that sells durable products. Not all wet markets sell live animals. Not all of them trade in wild and exotic animals, but some do, and some of those have been linked to outbreaks of zoonotic diseases, where an infection crosses the species barrier from animal to human. Exhibit A. Covid-19. The pandemic that allegedly originated at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, China .  Continue

[Carnism] Meat Consumption in the U.S. Is Growing at an Alarming Rate

The U.S. has the world’s second-highest consumption of beef and buffalo after Argentina.   Burgers, bacon, steaks, and other meat products have come under scrutiny in recent years due to their impact on health, sustainability, and social justice issues.  The number of companies working on meat alternatives in the U.S. is growing. Half of U.S. consumers under the age of 50 have already tried a plant-based meat product. Yet meat consumption in the U.S. is on the rise. As of 2017, America had the second-highest meat consumption in the world, surpassed only by Hong Kong.  How Much Meat Is Consumed in the U.S.? Americans consume around 274 pounds of meat per year on average, not accounting for seafood and fish, or individual food waste. Continue
