[Business] The Body Shop Commits to Going Vegan

  The cruelty-free beauty chain is working with The Vegan Society to remove all animal products from its offerings, 60 percent of which are currently vegan. Cruelty-free beauty retailer The Body Shop will be fully vegan by 2023. Founded in 1976 by British environmental activist Dame Anita Roddick, the retailer is working with The Vegan Society to remove remaining animal products from its formulations. Currently, 60 percent of The Body Shop’s offerings are clearly labeled as “vegan,” including its iconic perfume White Musk—which does not include the deer gland secretions found in non-vegan musk scents. “Our decision to go 100-percent vegan is a natural next step for The Body Shop,” Lionel Thoreau, Global Brand Director at The Body Shop, said. “Thanks to our founder Anita Roddick, we were the first beauty company to fight against animal testing in cosmetics, and the first major global beauty brand to use cruelty-free musk in our fragrances.” MORE

  50-year-old meat company NOBLE Jerky has gone vegan and witnessed its profits soar amid COVID-19 . The brand shifted away from animal products three years ago to create more sustainable plant-based jerky and other vegan products. It closed 2020 with a staggering 70 percent increase in revenue compared to the previous year. Stefan Urbani is the Co-Founder of NOBLE Jerky . In a statement sent to PBN, he said the brand realized raising animals for food production wasn’t sustainable. “We took our three generations of meat drying technical knowledge, along with new developments in plant-based proteins, to deliver people the ultimate sustainable plant-based protein that tastes just like a top-quality beef-jerky,” Urbani added. Atlast uses mycelium, a fiber found in mushrooms to create its vegan bacon – and thanks to the injection of funds, the next round of production can be sped up. ‘Incredible demand’ Among the investors were Viking Global, Stray Dog Capital, Downey Jr.’s Footprint Coalition Ventures, Applegate, Stonyfield, and Whole Foods. The investment follows ‘incredible demand’ for the product, which is part of the MyEats brand. Atlast’s President, Stephen Lomnes, said: “We are building the largest mycelium production facility in the US.” This is to provide consumers ‘a tastier alternative to their favorite animal proteins’, he added.

The news comes as Atlas Monroe recently acquired its own multi-million-dollar manufacturing plant at a two-story, 10,000-square-foot warehouse in San Diego, CA, with plans to open a second location this year. With the expansion, Atlas Monroe founder Deborah Torres has maintained 100-percent ownership of the company since her appearance on reality investment show Shark Tank .   ''More bizarre news from LoveSeitan HQ today. We have received a legal challenge to the name of our ‘Funky Chyck’n’ product, made completely of seitan.'' Apparently, it is too similar to ‘Funky Chicken’. Yes, you read that right. As such, the chicken wholesaler behind ’Funky Chicken’ has hired lawyers to ask us to stop using that name from now as it’s too similar to their registered trade mark. As a result, we are now changing the name of that product to ‘Seitan Chyck’n’. Funnily enough, our ‘Funky Chyck’n’ product has been around for over 2 years and it has never caused anyone any confusion. But that doesn’t matter apparently, it has to change now.   The NAACP Image Awards celebrate Black culture in the media, and this year is the first to include a social media category. Tabitha Brown , a beloved vegan TikTok personality and actress, has been nominated for a major media award that celebrates Black culture in the media. The star is up for Outstanding Social Media Personality at the 52nd National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards. This year, the event is set to feature the likes of Michelle Obama, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz and Samuel L. Jackson. It is the first year the awards have included the category, which seeks to recognize social media creators. Other categories recognize top films, television series, and leaders in social justice. Mark Cuban invested $300,000 into vegan meat brand Everything Legendary . Mark Cuban just made another vegan investment. Vegan meat brand Everything Legendary secured $300,000 in funding from the entrepreneur during an episode of Shark Tank, which aired in February. And within 24 hours of the show airing, the company sold $250,000 worth of its burgers online. With a rather extensive investment portfolio of plant-based brands, including Wild Earth and unreal Deli, Cuban has high hopes for the vegan meat market. “It’s going to keep on growing quickly,” he tells LIVEKINDLY in an email. “People realize [eating plant-based is] better for their own health, for the environment and it now tastes great!” But Everything Legendary isn’t your average vegan meat brand.
