[Health] What You Need For Healthy Bones – What You Should Avoid – Michael Greger, M.D.

The idea that the acid-forming quality of animal protein has to be buffered by calcium from the bones, thus leading to bone loss, might not be true. However, despite the fact that milk-drinkers have a higher calcium intake, long-term vegans were found to have the same bone mineral density .  The galactose in milk may explain why milk consumption is associated with significantly higher risk of hip fractures, cancer , and premature death . Still, vegans not getting enough calcium may be at higher risk of bone fractures , making the consumption of plant-based sources of calcium, such as broccoli and kale , important.   Calcium absorption from soy milk was found to be the same as cow’s milk, but soy milk needs to be shaken since the calcium tends to settle at the bottom. Cow’s milk consumption has been found to increase the risk of death and bone fractures, thought to be due to the galactose content. Low levels of testosterone may also lead to loss of bone density. [Health] Alkaline Vegan Diet Helped Father Beat Cancer: ‘I Was Told I Had Up To 12 Months To Live’

Johann Ilgenfritz transformed his life after adopting a whole-food plant-based diet which he says is the reason he managed to overcome seven tumors. Father-of-two Johann Ilgenfritz transformed his cancer diagnosis and credits switching to an alkaline vegan diet as the reason he was able to overcome it. The former fashion photographer was forced to put his career on hold when he was told he had just twelve months to live. However, it led him on a journey of self-discovery. Now, thanks to a plant-based diet, his health has drastically improved – and even led him to launch a health-themed radio show, UK Health Radio. ‘It all started in February 2011 when I had a heart attack at the age of 46, a shock that was followed up by a cancer diagnosis. ‘It was a double whammy that I didn’t react well to – it put me into a complete frenzy. I stumbled into radiotherapy and had this very strange feeling of not being part of the process, he said. At a cancer screening the following year, he was inf

[Health] No, You Won’t Starve On a Gluten-Free Vegan Diet

What is a gluten-free vegan diet, what are the health benefits, and what do gluten-free vegans eat? Don't worry, you can still have pizza! If you’re eating a gluten-free diet, you may have noticed that many of the foods are already plant-based: fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and legumes. So if you are looking to adopt a gluten-free vegan diet, there are many foods to choose from. Let’s start with the basics. Gluten is the name of the proteins that are found in several grains: wheat, rye, barley, and a rye/barley hybrid called triticale. Grains that contain wheat include whole wheat, bulgar, farro, farina, spelt, graham, durum, bromated flour (flour treated with potassium bromate), kamut (Khorasan wheat), and wheat berries. Wheat, rye, and barley are found in pastas, breads, and cereals, while barley is found in malt, food coloring, and brewer’s yeast. On a gluten-free diet, you also cannot eat couscous, which is made from semolina (durum wheat). Most of the population can consume

[Health] How Many Bowel Movements Should You Have Every Day?

Most people have between 3 bowel movements a day and 3 a week, but normal doesn’t necessarily mean optimal. DOCTOR'S NOTE I know people are suckers for poop videos—I’m so excited to finally be getting these up! There was actually a recent one though– Diet and Hiatal Hernia –that talks about the consequences of straining on stool. Hernias are better than Bedpan Death Syndrome, though—that’s what I talk about in in my next video:  Should You Sit, Squat, or Lean During a Bowel Movement? I do have some older videos on bowel health: Stool Size Matters Food Mass Transit Bulking Up on Antioxidants Prunes vs. Metamucil vs. Vegan Diet Breast Cancer and Constipation For more on this concept of having “normal” health parameters in a society where it’s normal to drop dead of heart attacks and other such preventable fates, see my video  When Low Risk Means High Risk . [Nutrition] What plant-based milk do experts recommend?

In a recent video with Plant Based Science London, Dr. Greger states: “I encourage people to drink unsweetened soy milk, which is the healthiest milk out there. Of course, you don’t have to drink any milk at all… If you put it on Fruit Loops it doesn’t matter what kind of milk, it’s all bad. “But if you’re using that milk to moisten your oat groats in the morning. Well, then unsweetened soy is probably the best.” You can read the full study here
