[Activism] Seaspiracy - An Animal Rights Activist’s Perspective

Have you heard about this documentary Seaspiracy?  Of course you have.  While it may be a great resource to educate the public, what if the documentary, and the others in the series, were actually doing more harm than good for animal rights activists and our movement?  What if they were keeping us back from doing the crucial work to grow our movement and achieve the tangible goals the movie lays out for us? I have feelings. Obviously.

[Activism] From Mud to Hugs: See This ‘Backyard Dog’ Now!

This video celebrates the rescue of a gentle dog who spent years chained up outside in a muddy backyard. The only affection she received came from PETA’s fieldworkers, who visited her as much as they could, giving her water, food, and companionship—but some days, she was so timid and depressed that she didn’t even come out of her doghouse.  All that changed when her owner finally agreed to let PETA find her a new home. Now, she has a fancy new name (Wolfie von Fluffer Bottom, or Wolfie for short) and lives indoors with a family who loves her—and a warm home, cuddles on the couch, and playtime with her new dog brother was all she needed to bring her out of her shell.  PETA's mission statement is that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way: https://www.peta.org/about-peta/  The website the meat industry doesn't want you to see: https://www.meat.org/   How to go vegan: https://how-to-go-vegan.peta.org/   PETA Saves: h

[Animal Life] This Pregnant Pig Jumped From a Truck Heading to the Slaughter House – Now She’s Living Free With Her Babies in New Sanctuary Home (VIDEO)

People who abuse animals often do so under the incorrect assumption that animals are too stupid to know what is happening to them. But as we know, this is hardly the case, and animals show us how intelligent they are every day. Take, for example, the story of Rita the pregnant pig. Before Rita lived at Animal Place sanctuary, she was raised on a factory farm . This sort of existence is typically nothing short of horrific for sows who are confined to small crates and deprived of all their basic needs.  All this changed for Rita, however, when she was loaded onto a truck to be transported to slaughter. She was smart enough to know that she had to escape, so she took a leap of faith! Continue...

[Environment] Forest restoration provides a path to pandemic recovery, greener future

Recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic should lead to stronger action to safeguard the world’s forests, a senior UN official said on Friday, highlighting how these natural resources have helped to protect health and well-being during the global crisis. Liu Zhenmin, head of the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), issued the call during a virtual event to commemorate the International Day of Forests , observed annually on 21 March. Meanwhile, green spaces, parks and forests have been vital during “these times of social distancing”, and healthy, well-managed forests also act as natural buffers against zoonoses, thus warding against the risk of future pandemics. “Yet, despite their obvious importance, forests continue to be under threat”, Mr. Liu said. [Animal Life] Interpreting “Blue Loss” and Measuring the Hidden Animals in Our Food System

This report examines the issue of “blue loss,” or how many aquatic animals are unaccounted for in the human food chain each year.  Aquaculture is often touted as the solution to overfishing, yet our study has found that up to half of all animals caught at sea are fed to fish on farms.  This poses serious questions about aquaculture’s animal welfare paradigm. Listed below are our main findings: ● Approximately 1.2 trillion aquatic animals are fed to other aquatic animals each year. This is approximately one-third to one-half of all animals fished. ● In order to produce the billions of fish that end up on the human plate, trillions of fish are processed, or fed live, as fish feed. ● Many of the fish we feed Salmon have similar welfare needs, thus creating a ‘welfare pyramid’ effect, as each farmed salmon must eat the biomass equivalent to 9 herring, or 120 anchovies, to be brought to harvest weight. ● In terms of welfare, this means that each farmed fish we produce under welfare scrutiny
