[Celebrities] Everyone, Even Trisha Paytas, Is Talking (And Thinking) About ‘Seaspiracy’

LA influencer Trisha Paytas says 'Seaspiracy' got her thinking about how her individual choices impact the oceans. It’s been nearly two weeks since Netflix’s Seaspiracy has come out and discussions about it on my social media feed don’t seem to have slowed down. Former co-workers and long-distance acquaintances who once bristled at my plant-based work lunches are now having in-depth conversations about overfishing, bycatch, and the global industrial fishing industry’s overall impact on the planet. Everyone is in on the conversation, and it feels good to see it. LA-influencer Trisha Paytas is one of the thousands who have watched the somewhat controversial doc. On Easter morning, she posted a vlog recorded poolside at her spacious new five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home in Ventura County. It starts off not so different from her typical check-ins with her 1.44 million subscribers on YouTube; she wishes everyone a happy holiday and she gives a little life update all while her fia

[Activism] Do You Have a Moral Obligation to go Vegan Today? Let's Look...

The Village Vegan endorses a more measured approach:   There are generally three main reasons people choose to go vegan: for environmental, ethical and health reasons. If going vegan is something you are interested in doing, it is worth exploring which ones speak to you (it could be all three!) and tapping into that to keep you motivate. Continue...

[Documentary] ‘Seaspiracy’ Continues Making Waves: Here’s Why Fish Is Not A Health Food

Some who stop eating meat continue eating fish in the belief that it’s good for them and that fishing is less cruel and destructive than farming - nothing could be further from the truth. We need fats called essential fatty acids for our cell membranes, brain and nervous system. They help regulate blood pressure, blood-clotting, immune and inflammatory responses and are called ‘essential’ because we can’t make them in our bodies, we must get them from food. ALA is an omega-3 essential fatty acid found in plant foods such as flaxseeds, rapeseeds, soya, walnuts and their oils. We convert it, in our bodies, into the longer-chain omega-3s EPA and DHA. These are also found in oily fish, which they obtain from algae. Conversion rates in the body can be low, which is why some people insist that fish oils are essential for health. They are not, in fact, they could be doing more harm than good. UK guidelines recommend that we should eat at least two 140g portions of fish a week, one of which

[Smart-Arsery] Here’s Why Vegan Diets Don’t Work

Thinking of changing things up and ditching animal products for good? Think again. Thinking of going vegan? You’d be joining an exclusive group of roughly 79 million if you do. It’s clearly not a popular lifestyle choice, and there’s a good reason for that: vegan diets don’t work. And here’s why. While the stereotype states that vegans only eat rabbit food, I’m sorry to tell you that if you were looking for a diet where carrots and hay are two of the key food groups, you’re going to be disappointed. Vegan diets are varied, and there is no singular way to follow one. If you love to eat only plant-based whole foods, that’s great. If you love the occasional indulgence, you’ll fit right in too. Name your favorite food and there’s probably a vegan version of it somewhere. Nowadays, supermarkets (like Tesco and Walmart ) are filled with dairy-free ice creams, vegan candy bars, and plant-based cheese. There are even vegan options at many of the world’s most popular fast-food chains. Continue

[Environment] Industry Leaders Speak Out About the Seaspiracy Documentary – Is a Shift to Plant-Based Enough?

Following this week’s Netflix release of the documentary Seaspiracy , industry figures from Greenpeace, Earth Warriors, Roots & Hoots, and plant-based seafood producer Loma Linda , share opinions on the issues raised and the conclusions reached in the film. Veganism is one answer, but the planet’s overpopulation is another issue which needs to be addressed, as is education and a lack thereof, say these plantbased leaders. Greenpeace responds A blog post from Will McCallum , head of oceans at Greenpeace UK, posits that a shift to plant-based is crucial but not enough. “Seeing the destruction of the natural world, both on land and at sea, has moved more and more people to become vegan.  This is a hugely positive thing: the more people that turn to a plant-based diet, the better it will be for the planet . But although it might be part of the puzzle, veganism isn’t the silver bullet for our oceans. A campaign that focuses only on veganism ignores the billions of people that depend o
