[Commentary] Rawvana's Tips To Quit Vegan & Start Eating Animals Again!

Rawvana, now known as Yovana Mendoza, made a video providing tips for people transitioning away from a vegan diet back to one of eating meat, dairy, fish, and eggs!  But that's not the worst part. Sadly, her video is riddled with misinformation about vegan diets such as vegans can't get vitamin b12, omega 3 fatty acids, or protein. She even seems to be suggesting that female vegans' monthly cycles stop!

[Activism] Vegan Vs Environmentalist - Are Individual Actions Important?

Discussion/debate that pits a vegan vs environmentalist who eats meat and doesn't believe individual actions are important.   The title of the video is "Vegan Vs Environmentalist" but in reality this was less of an argument and more of a discussion.  The environmentalist is part of the group Extinction Rebellion, this discussion took place during one of their events in Helsinki, Finland, where they were raising awareness of climate change and global warming and demanding the government make changes.

[Vegan Ethics] What speciesism actually is...

Speciesism: the assumption of human superiority leading to the exploitation of animals. Speciesism is so ingrained and normalised within society that we don’t even consider it a problem.  Many humans view non-human animals with such little regard that the very concept of animals deserving moral consideration is seen as offensive, as they believe that recognising that other animals also deserve basic rights is somehow demeaning to our own species.  But in the words of Oscar winning actor and animal rights activist, Joaquin Phoenix, “it takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.”

[Ethics] Vegan Student Wins Discrimination Case After Being Told ‘Study Unit On Farming Or Fail’

'I couldn’t simply break my way of living purely to pass a course'. Avegan student has won a discrimination case after she was told to study a unit on farming ‘or fail’. 18-year-old Fiji Willetts is from Downend in Bristol. She’s currently studying for a BTEC National Extended Diploma in Animal Management at South Gloucestershire college. According to the college’s prospectus, the course is great for people ‘who love animals’ and are ‘passionate about conservation’. However, after enrolling, Willetts found she had to take, and pass, a module on Farm Husbandry. This branch of agriculture focuses on raising animals for meat, fiber, milk, eggs, or other products. It includes day-to-day care, selective breeding and the raising of livestock for the purpose of gaining the ‘best quality meats, and most milk and eggs from those animals’. Students were also expected to attend working farms to help the farmers. A visit to a slaughterhouse was also discussed. Willetts discussed her eth

[Carnism] Golden Retriever Burgers Trending?! Catch On To Carnism

This man is eating a golden retriever burger, with cheese made from horse’s milk on a bun glazed with canary’s eggs. He doesn’t feel disturbed, though, because his brain is plugged into a matrix. This is the matrix of carnism. Catch On To Carnism Carnism is essentially the opposite of veganism. “Carn” means “flesh” or “of the flesh” and “ism” refers to a belief system. Because carnism is invisible, people rarely realize that eating animals is a choice, rather than a given. In meat-eating cultures around the world, people typically don’t think about why they eat certain animals but not others, or why they eat any animals at all. But when eating animals is not a necessity, which is the case for many people in the world today, then it’s a choice, and choices always stem from beliefs. As long as we remain unaware of how carnism impacts us, we’ll be unable to make our food choices freely—because without awareness, there is no free choice. #CatchOnToCarnism

[Health] Wellbeing & Veganism: Connecting with animals

In this third opinion piece as part of our Wellbeing & Veganism research programme, Researcher Network member, Summer Philips , considers the link between nature, animals, happiness, and wellbeing. If humans could purr, one would imagine they would do so frequently. We are tactile and emotional animals and experiencing happiness and pleasure are favourite pastimes. We don’t need detailed scientific studies to be able to acknowledge the feelings we experience when we are emotionally uplifted, however, the scientific theory is interesting. Evolutionary theories suggest that humans didn’t evolve into their current physical form and then have emotion conveniently dropped in, but that emotion has evolved with us on our journey to where we currently stand. (As an aside I would like to note that we stand on a branch of the evolutionary tree and certainly not at the top of it! I would suggest reading Frans De Waal [1] for more on what he terms ‘antropodenial’.) Have you ever spent time

[Vegan?] Never Vegan: Veganism as an identity, and as an identity crisis.

Commentary: ''I eat a vegan diet, but there's an important sense in which I'm an ex-vegan, too, and I can sympathize with people like Jon Venus. Jon, for his part, is both an ex-vegan and an ex-bodybuilder, now scrambling to replace the things that formerly made his life meaningful, to take on a new sense of direction and purpose.''

Annual campaign Veganuary amassed 582,000 participants in 2021 and the majority of them plan to drastically reduce their consumption of animal products moving forward. ASK The Village Vegan | ''What is the history of veganism?''

QUESTION: What is the history of veganism? Here, briefly, is the history of veganism starting with the coining of the word in 1944, but it must be added that the ideology that is veganism has been around for thousands of years. The earliest record of vegetarianism dates back to 500 BCE in India.  The ancient religion of Jainism promotes a meat-free diet. Jain vegetarianism is one of the most strict and rigorous religiously motivated diets on the Indian subcontinent. Hinduism and Buddhism also incorporate a vegetarian diet and originate in approximately 1500 BCE and the 5th century, respectively. In August 1944, a few members of the UK's Vegetarian Society asked that part of its newsletter be set aside for non-dairy vegetarianism. When the request was rejected, Donald Watson , secretary of the Leicester branch, set up a new quarterly newsletter in November 1944. He called it: * The Vegan News . The word 'vegan' was invented by Watson and Dorothy Morgan, who he would la

{Environment] 10 Shocking Stats About Water and Meat-Eating

If you’re concerned about the amount of water you use, then it might be time to stop counting the seconds you spend in the shower and turn your attention to what you’re eating. Not only will going vegan reduce your water usage, it will also help protect the planet in other ways, improve your health, and prevent countless animals from being born to suffer on farms. Continue

[Investing] Mark Cuban Likes Investing In Vegan Meat

Mark Cuban invested $300,000 into vegan meat brand Everything Legendary . Mark Cuban just made another vegan investment. Vegan meat brand Everything Legendary secured $300,000 in funding from the entrepreneur during an episode of Shark Tank, which aired in February. And within 24 hours of the show airing, the company sold $250,000 worth of its burgers online. With a rather extensive investment portfolio of plant-based brands, including Wild Earth and unreal Deli, Cuban has high hopes for the vegan meat market. “It’s going to keep on growing quickly,” he tells LIVEKINDLY in an email. “People realize [eating plant-based is] better for their own health, for the environment and it now tastes great!” But Everything Legendary isn’t your average vegan meat brand. According to co-founder, Duane “Myko” Cheers, the Black-owned company is looking to revolutionize the vegan meat market with its soy- and gluten-free, pea protein-based meat. Continue

[Video] Vegans Are Hypocrites!? Should That Stop YOU From Being Vegan?

Are vegans hypocrites? Does that make veganism pointless? Should you let vegan hypocrisy stop you from being vegan yourself? ''I think one of the biggest takeaways from this video should hopefully be that I am not perfect and that I still cause harm as a vegan. I have been changing my life in a lot of ways over the last 3+ years since I have become vegan, but it should come as no surprise that I have not become a perfect being in that short time span.  I am however continuously working on myself and constantly working on improving. I am by no means done with making changes in my life for the better and I'm definitely not done trying to live more in alignment with my morals. If you would like to do the same then feel free to join in with me.  We will never be perfect and veganism doesn't make you some immaculate being all of the sudden, but it is a great way to reduce suffering and a big step towards a better life for all beings on this planet.''   Vegan Yak

[Religion] Many Seventh-Day Adventists Believe You Must Be Vegan to Be Saved

While Seventh-day Adventists around the world have heeded their co-founder’s teachings on eating a plant-based diet, veganism has risen for some adherents to a place next to godliness. Denominational researchers found that many members in South Asia believe salvation is ensured two ways: through Jesus Christ (92%), and through giving up meat, animal products, alcohol, and tobacco (80%). Within the denomination’s East-Central Africa Division—which has the second-most vegan or vegetarian members (42%)—three-quarters of members (74%) maintain that dietary choices contribute to salvation. “The data suggest that Adventist Church leadership needs to engage in further member education to differentiate and avoid confusion between the benefits of adhering to the Adventist Health Message and the Church’s belief that the actual source of salvation is through Jesus Christ alone,” wrote Andrews University sociologist Duane McBride, lead author on a recent paper in the Review of Religious Research.
