[Environment/Health] Beans Not Beef for the Planet and People

Beans, not beef! That's the message doctors with the Physicians Committee are sharing with policymakers in Washington, D.C., this Earth Day to raise awareness of the role of dietary contributors to climate change.  Studies show that beans are beneficial for both the health of the planet and the health of people. The demonstration coincides with the White House’s climate summit with 40 world leaders. The Physicians Committee recently petitioned the White House to update its executive order titled “Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad” to recommend policy changes that could help alleviate the climate crisis and improve human health by cutting animal agriculture and promoting a plant-based diet.

[Health] Dietitian Debunks Report Calling For Over 65’s To Eat More Meat And Dairy

'It is incorrect to say that the best source of iron is meat. Our bodies do absorb haem iron more efficiently than the non-haem iron in plants'. A report by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) claiming people over the age of 65 should increase their meat and dairy intake has been blasted ‘disappointing’ by a dietitian. The FSAI is a statutory body and claims its recommendations are to ‘improve health’ among older adults and promote increased muscle mass. Published this week, the report sets out a list of dietary guidelines. It recommended the increased consumption of high-quality proteins. These are to be found in meat, poultry, fish, dairy, and eggs, it claimed. However, it makes no mention of plant-based proteins such as legumes, tofu, tempeh, and nuts. Continue...

[Health] How a Vegan Diet Affects the Brain: Is there anything to worry about??

A recent article published by the BBC claims that vegan diets can be detrimental to brain health – so naturally, there has been a lot of speculation on this topic. What’s the truth when it comes to vegan brain health? Today I’m answering this question and explaining the science behind it. Recently, the BBC posted an article on their website titled, “ How a Vegan Diet Could Affect Your Intelligence ”. I’m here to set the facts straight and debunk the sensationalized, biased and blatantly false claims laid out in this article. This is one of several opinion pieces written by the BBC in the past year not-so-subtly attacking a plant-based diet. Typically, I would prefer not to call attention to articles that are pure nonsense, like this one, but in this case, I felt it was important to address the claims and falsities as I know many people have questions about them. I also want to demonstrate the importance of using a critical eye when reading news articles. This is an example of how a see

[Health] Are vegan diets good for your heart?

Some people turn to a vegan diet in the hopes it will benefit their heart health. YES! (The definition of a plant-based diets, veganism, specifically, is the complete exclusion of animal products, including meat, fish, poultry, seafood, dairy, and eggs.)  The vegan diet has been found to be significantly associated with beneficial changes in cardiometabolic CVD risk factors, such as lower BMIs, serum total cholesterol levels, serum glucose levels, inflammation, and blood pressure, compared to omnivorous diets, which are typically lower in whole grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables   Such positive cardiovascular health effects may result from lower intakes of dietary cholesterol, saturated fat, and red and processed meat, as well as higher intakes of fiber, plant protein, and phytonutrients.  These observations suggest that the vegan diet may have therapeutic potential in preventing or treating cardiovascular disease. Michael Greger, M.D. shares a personal story about reversing  CVD..

When I became pregnant with my first daughter, I was almost 40. My diet at that time consisted of mainly vegetables, small amounts of (mainly) wholegrains, lots of tofu, lentils, nuts, seeds and beans, and I continued eating in exactly the same way throughout my pregnancy . I had no morning sickness, no cravings, no complications, no deficiencies and delivered both my children safely at home. I began to wonder if my experience was an isolated one, or if in fact many vegan women experience completely problem free pregnancies like I did. So I spoke to other women who had been vegan through pregnancy and here are my discoveries...
