[Health] Essential Workers: Vegan Nurse Shares How to Give Back

When asked what she wanted for Mother’s Day, this vegan nurse showed just how much the little things can mean. Crissandra “Angel” Hall is a single vegan mom of four. You may recognize her three girls as the acro yoga trio known as DZ Vegan Kid Athletes on Instagram, but what their back-bending poses don’t reveal is the dedicated woman behind the camera. In addition to being a full-time mom, she’s a full-time nurse, and when the pandemic hit, she was sent across the country to hot spots such as New York City, NY and Austin, TX. After weeks away from her family with intermittent cross-country flights to attend her children’s birthdays and gymnastics competitions, she continues to show up for both her family and her patients.  Even though many of us see a light at the end of the tunnel, essential workers are still essential, and they deserve every kindness we can spare. This Mother’s Day, let’s treat all moms—not just our own, but those working in these essential roles. Here are nine

[Activism] Seaspiracy Producer Demands Shut Down Fish Factory Farms

Kip Anderson—producer of ocean conservation documentary Seaspiracy—and PETA President Ingrid Newkirk are demanding the Biden Administration overturn a Trump-era executive order that allows the proliferation of fish factory farms.   This week, filmmaker Kip Anderson, producer of ocean conservation film Seaspiracy, and Ingrid Newkirk, president of animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), sent a joint letter to President Joe Biden.  In the letter, Anderson and Newkirk demanded that President Biden overturn Executive Order 13921, which allows for the proliferation of offshore fish factory farms, which, aside from being cru farmed fish, are environmentally damaging to wild marine populations and oceans.  The Trump-era executive order also limits the environmental review of developing these aquaculture farms and places the burden on taxpayers to identify the locations where these farms can be constructed. [Opinion] Should Ethical Vegans Get The COVID-19 Vaccine?

Jordi Casamitjana Walks Us Through The Arguments Of Getting Vaccinated As Ethical Vegans Should ethical vegans get the Covid-19 vaccine? This is going to be the key vegan question of 2021. As a long-term vegan and author of the book Ethical Vegan , other people who share my philosophical belief often ask me whether they should get the Covid-19 vaccine, as many find themselves stuck in a dilemma when trying to decide. It is not up to me to advise anyone on this matter (I am not a doctor or a public health expert) and I believe this really must be each person’s decision (which is also the official position of the Vegan Society ). Besides, people can get stigmatised by either having had the vaccine or not, so we should be careful when we ask this question to others, and, as with any medical issue, we should respect confidentiality and avoid pressuring anyone to reveal what decision they made. Above all, we should never judge other vegans for having decided differently than us, as this is

[Spirituality] Inter-being defined

“Interbeing: If you are a poet, you will see clearly that there is a cloud floating in this sheet of paper. Without a cloud, there will be no rain; without rain, the trees cannot grow; and without trees, we cannot make paper. The cloud is essential for the paper to exist. If the cloud is not here, the sheet of paper cannot be here either. So we can say that the cloud and the paper inter-are. “Interbeing” is a word that is not in the dictionary yet, but if we combine the prefix “inter-” with the verb “to be,” we have a new verb, inter-be. Without a cloud and the sheet of paper inter-are. If we look into this sheet of paper even more deeply, we can see the sunshine in it. If the sunshine is not there, the forest cannot grow. In fact, nothing can grow. Even we cannot grow without sunshine. And so, we know that the sunshine is also in this sheet of paper. The paper and the sunshine inter-are. And if we continue to look, we can see the logger who cut the tree and brought it to the mill to

[Wildlife] Mini Hotels, Bus Shelters, and 5 Other Initiatives Saving the Bees

The Netherlands is saving bees with insect hotels and pollinator-friendly bus stops known as "bee stops." The city of Utrecht, Netherlands is saving bees with a huge insect hotel.  The project consists of more than 200 individual nesting boxes for wild bees and other essential pollinators. The bee homes cover a 28 meter-high billboard tower on the side of the A2 motorway — one of the busiest highways in the country. Because wild bees search for pollen and nectar within 200 meters of their nesting site, the city of Utrecht also planted a 7,000 m2 meadow of wildflowers nearby, complete with sand and hills for native ground-nesting populations such as plasterer or “silk” bees. Wildflower meadows provide a huge boost to pollinators of all kinds, and road and railway sidings in general have proven important breaks in pervasive agricultural landscapes. They offer unique and biodiverse ecosystem services to local wildlife and frequently make constructive use of previously underut

[Environment] This Company Is Leading The Fight Against Single-Use Plastic

It now goes without saying that the world is at serious risk from escalating environmental hazards. News reports about global warming, the use of fossil fuels, and other alarming ecological disasters are now ubiquitous. But somehow, the ever-growing single-use plastic crisis has garnered less attention, despite it now reaching epidemic proportions. Plastic is a durable product, designed for longevity. While this is useful in some regards, it’s also becoming increasingly apparent that it spells bad news for the environment. It all boils down to the sheer scale of plastic produced, and the incredibly long time it takes to break down. The mass-production of plastic only started in the 1950s. Yet since then we’ve created 8.3 billion tonnes of the material. To put this in perspective, that’s the equivalent weight of 25,000 Empire State Buildings , or 100 cities full of skyscrapers. From teenage years to your 50s and beyond, here's everything you need to know about plant-based women's nutrition by your age group. While the beauty and diet world would like everyone to believe the secret to healthful aging is about our appearance, science knows better: The inside-out approach is what counts. About 41 percent of cis women ages 19-50 have at least one nutritional deficiency, according to a 2017 review published in Nutrients. Both JB and VC had to carry all their tools, food, and water from start to finish of each stage.  Each day has its own unique hurdles to overcome, from cycling through sand to finding water. This film follows that story. This may be one of the most grueling weeks of gravel bicycle riding that has ever been captured on film. This is episode 1, s

[Commentary] 'Vegan News' is All About FOOD! 🍠🌿 I Michael Corthell

by Michael Corthell, The Village Vegan Most of the top vegan news sites are (nearly) all about plant based foods with few stories about veganism itself. Why is that? We even like to know how are favorite celebrities are getting along in their vegan life and what companies they are supporting and investing in. But isn't our first job as vegans to promote and advocate for veganism? Having emotional attachments with animals may form part of that reason, while many believe that all sentient creatures have a right to life and freedom. [Politics] Claim Joe Biden Plans To Cut 90% Of Red Meat From US Diets Debunked ✔

'At no point in his presidency has Biden suggested policies aimed at limiting red meat consumption' Credit: Lisa Ferdinando Fact-checking site Snopes.com has debunked a claim surrounding POTUS Joe Biden . The politician recently pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. However, the announcement resulted in The Daily Mail running a story saying the climate plan could hypothetically result in US citizens only being entitled to one burger a month. Does Joe Biden want to cut America’s meat consumption? This lead to politician Lauren Boebert tweeting: “Joe Biden’s climate plan includes cutting 90 percent of red meat from our diets by 2030. “They want to limit us to about four pounds a year. Why doesn’t Joe stay out of my kitchen?” Boebert also tweeted a meme of former POTUS Donald Trump surrounded by fast-food burgers, mocking the alleged rule of one burger per month. Continue...

[Health] Disease Mongering: Creating a Market from a Disease

Today we bring you - another golden gem of a video from John McDougall MD, this time discussing disease mongering.  Disease mongering is what the pharmaceutical and medical device businesses do in order to make money - to push questionable drugs, surgeries, potions, gimmicks and generally unnecessary (but profitable) treatments. The first step in disease mongering is to create a definition for a disease that will encompass a large portion of the population - be that a market for osteoporosis drugs, cholesterol drugs, vaccines - or other unnecessary treatments.   Doctors then sell the relative rather than absolute benefits. It's a great way to fool patients, to make them think there is a huge benefit - when the benefit is actually miniscule and the product possibly dangerous.  McDougall says doctors need to stop going along with this. In this classic talk from our 2005 Expo, McDougall doesn't hold back. He won't be involved in pushing useless treatments - it's unethica

To combat climate change, we need to reduce fossil fuel emissions, and draw down excess CO2 to restore the balance of greenhouse gases.  Like all plants, trees consume atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis. So what can trees do to help in this fight?  Jean-François Bastin digs into the efforts to restore depleted ecosystems. Lesson by Jean-François Bastin, directed by Lobster Studio.

[Carnism] A brief history of cannibalism

Human cannibalism is a lot more common than you might think. Dive into its complex history and see its uses in medicine, cultural rituals and in times of survival.   15th century Europeans believed they had hit upon a miracle cure: a remedy for epilepsy, hemorrhage, bruising, nausea and virtually any other medical ailment.  It was a brown powder known as “mumia,” and was made by grinding up mummified human flesh. But just how common is human cannibalism, and how do cultures partake in it?  Bill Schutt explores the complex history of cannibalism. Lesson by Bill Schutt, directed by Basa.

[Animal Rights] Belgian animal rights group calls for no more experiments on dogs or cats

Belgium’s animal rights group GAIA is lobbying the three ministers in charge of animal welfare to ask that no more authorizations be granted for experiments on healthy dogs and cats that are knowingly made ill, it said in a communication published on Friday. GAIA, which stands for Global Action in the Interest of Animals, describes itself as an organization that “unites defenders of animal welfare and advocates for animal rights in Belgium.” The association conducted a survey in 2019 on the use of laboratory animals in Belgium and estimates that 1,302 experiments were carried out on 542 dogs, all of the Beagle breed. The majority of these were in Flanders, with 1,286 experiments on 526 animals. Last week they launched a satirical campaign calling for beagle owners to bring their dogs to laboratory testing centers to combat an urgent need for test animals, and today they’ve launched a new website focused on raising awareness of (and eventually ending) the use of animals as test subj

[Animal Rights] The guards caring for Chernobyl's abandoned dogs

The descendants of pets abandoned by those fleeing the Chernobyl disaster are now striking up a curious relationship with humans charged with guarding the contaminated area. It wasn't long after he arrived in the irradiated landscape of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone that Bogdan realized his new job came with some unexpected companions. From his first days as a checkpoint guard in Chernobyl, he has shared the place with a pack of dogs. Bogdan (not his real name) is now in his second year of working in the zone and has got to know the dogs well. Some have names, some don't. Some stay nearby, others remain detached – they come and go as they please. Bogdan and the other guards feed them, offer them shelter, and occasionally give them medical care. They bury them when they die. All the dogs are, in a sense, refugees of the 1986 disaster in which Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. In the aftermath, tens of thousands of people were evacuated from the Ukrainia
